Matrix proudly presents the Wool Store Heritage Office Space Revival project, a testament to our commitment to preserving heritage while modernizing commercial spaces. In close collaboration with the landlord, we undertook the transformation of recently vacated office space within a heritage-listed asset in the historic Wool Store buildings of Newstead.
Project Scope:
Staircase Design and Construction: Matrix was tasked with designing and constructing a new staircase, seamlessly integrating it into the heritage-rich environment while improving accessibility from the ground floor to the first floor.
Services and Infrastructure Upgrades: To accommodate the incoming tenant’s needs, we designed and executed essential service and infrastructure upgrades. This included modernizing utilities and adapting the existing systems to meet current standards.
Heritage Preservation: Our top priority was the protection of the Wool Store buildings’ heritage aspects. This involved meticulous planning to ensure that the new staircase design complemented existing heritage elements. Additionally, we strategically positioned the staircase to minimize the removal of original flooring, all while coordinating infrastructure upgrades using existing risers and lateral reticulation points.
Flood Management: Given the proximity of the Wool Store buildings to the river and the history of flood events, we navigated the complexities of flood overlays to implement robust infrastructure upgrades that would ensure the safety and functionality of the space.

In-House Construction Knowledge: Our extensive in-house construction expertise allowed us to safely install the new staircase and carry out necessary floor penetrations with precision, ensuring minimal disruption to the building’s heritage fabric.

This strategic approach expedited the approvals process and allowed us to complete the project well within the original budget expectations set out in the initial brief.
